Thinking of Moving to Bolton

Bolton is one of the country’s largest towns, with a strong and diverse identity and a rich history.

In the foothills of the West Pennine Moors, Bolton is between Manchester (10 miles (16 km) south-east), Blackburn, Wigan, Bury and Salford. It is surrounded by several towns and villages that form the wider borough of which Bolton is the administrative centre. The town is also within the historic county boundaries of Lancashire.

Bolton is surrounded by picturesque countryside which offers plenty of opportunity for outdoor pursuits and scenic walks. Jumbles Country Park, Moses Gate Country Park and Smithills Country Park are within easy reach, whilst just to the north of Bolton you will discover the beautiful Turton and Entwistle Reservoir.

Bolton is a historical town that benefits from the amenities of being a big town. For professionals, there are excellent career opportunities in the area and its proximity to Manchester opens up a plethora of job opportunities, with good rail transport giving direct access to Manchester city centre.

The Office for National Statistics measurements place Bolton as the number one happy place in Greater Manchester. From 2022 to 2023, Bolton’s average happiness scale was at 7.6, up 0.1 from the previous year (7.5). Manchester itself ranked the lowest of all the boroughs, at just 6.8 on the happiness scale.17 Dec 2023.
