More About the Turton Area

It may not be immediately apparent, but Turton meant “Thor’s town” in Old English for all you Vikings fans out there. This name points to the fact that the area was once a hotbed of Scandinavian enclaves. Not much has changed since those days of tilling the rich soil and celebrating the turning of the seasons. Turton is still an area where people enjoy a quieter pace of life with tramping, countryside walks and warming winter fires blowing down on the wind.

Turton is also home to one of the oldest, if not the oldest, football club in the Britain. Turton Football Club was founded in 1871. Its original ground is still used today by the Old Boltonians team and is believed to be the oldest football pitch still in use today. Turton Football Club now play at Thomasson Fold in Edgeworth. There’s no shortage of places to eat in Turton with Giuseppe’s proving a local favourite. The Chetham Arms and The Victorian Tea Room also come highly recommended.
