Blackrod is a small town situated directly west of Bolton and is part of Greater Horwich. Blackrod is also located on the opposite side of the M61 to most of Horwich, just a short drive away from Bolton. Approximately 5,000 people live in Blackrod, while the whole of the Horwich Bolton area has a population of about 20,000 people.

By far the most famous aspect of Blackrod and Horwich is the fact that it is now home to the professional football club the Bolton Wanderers. The Bolton Wanderers moved to the University of Bolton Stadium in 1997. Visit the stadium on game day to see fans filling the seats to support the football club.

Horwich has a wide range of shopping options and supermarkets, including Tesco, Aldi, Asda and Iceland. There is also a weekly outdoor market which brings in many locals and visitors alike. It is a great event to enjoy the weather and meet with friends.

Two main train stations connect the area to nearby towns. Blackrod Station and Horwich Parkway Station connect the village to nearby cities such as Preston, Manchester and Bolton. Both stations have park-and-ride facilities. On top of regular trains connecting to Bolton, there are also several bus routes which run between the two areas.

There are two secondary schools that residents can choose from — Rivington and Blackrod High School and St Joseph’s RC High School. For primary schools, there are a few more options, with six available in the area.

The Horwich area has plenty of churches that run regular services for the community. Horwich is also famous for the Horwich Heritage Centre. This is a museum that focuses on the history of the town and its agricultural heritage.
